Problem statement

Problem statement

De Ont/moeting is a mobile community house on wheels in Amsterdam North. The initiative aims to improve social cohesion and foster a sense of community in Amsterdam North, as well as to create more inclusive urban spaces where different opinions and radical imagination are given space.

How can we design an inclusive and accessible community-sharing platform for the digitally illiterate members of the ‘De Ontmoeting’ community to facilitate caravan reservations and social event participation?

Problematization

Context

Amsterdam Noord is in a transition phase, belonging to the municipality's initiative called 'Aanpak Noord' which aims to tackle problems such as poverty, unemployment, and outdated housing. This transition affects local citizens and increases the gap between newcomers, expats, and the original citizens.

As part of the larger municipality's approach, the initiative 'De Ontmoeting' aims to foster social cohesion and create inclusive urban environments. The initiative seeks to provide a platform for diverse perspectives, embracing a diversity of thoughts and radical imagination as essential elements of community-building.

Target audience
The platform considers digitally literate, less digitally literate individuals, and people with special needs to ensure broad accessibility and usability.

Asylum seekers (societal, ages 18–20)

Interested in offering social goods or services

Newcomers, expats, with a high socio-economic status

Stadspas users

Digitally literate and less literate group

(NGOs)

Rent / organise a workshop or event

Users with accessibility or special needs

Users with limited physical mobility

Users with accessibility or special needs

A group requiring accessibility standards, including individuals with dyslexia, visual impairments, and contrast sensitivity issues.

The project prioritizes an inclusive and accessible platform but intentionally excludes digitally illiterate users (those without smartphone or digital access) to ensure effective testing of digital flows within the project scope.

After defining the project scope, a design-by-doing approach informed mostly the iterative design process to validate the design decisions.

Community platform

The platform supports meaningful interactions and strengthens connections within the neighbourhood by designing an inclusive and accessible community-sharing platform for the digitally illiterate members of the ‘De Ontmoeting’ community. This facilitates caravan reservations and social event participation.

In collaboration with the client, our goal is to gradually develop the platform in stages, following a suggested UX roadmap. Currently, the project is being further developed using Framer.
